Book an eye test
Every heading on this site is set on a real acuity chart. Sizes step by 100.1 — the logMAR line spacing — and each section prints the line it is set at. Headings arrive one line too large and correct as you reach them, the way a lens does: in clicks, not by degrees.
Eye tests
A full sight test here runs 45 minutes, not the twenty minutes a high-street chain allows. It ends where every refraction ends — with two lenses and one question. Better with one, or two?
Retinal photography and an OCT scan are included in the £45 fee, not sold on top of it. If you are entitled to an NHS-funded test we will tell you before you pay for anything.
Glasses and dispensing
Frames are measured to your face, not handed over in a bag. Every pair is fitted twice: once at collection and once a fortnight later, when it has settled.
Single-vision lenses from £39 a pair. Varifocals are quoted from the corridor length that suits your prescription, and we will say plainly when a cheaper lens would do the same job.
Contact lenses
A fitting is a separate appointment with its own measurements: curvature, tear film, and a trial pair worn for a week before anything is ordered.
Monthly plans from £14, cancellable in writing with a month's notice. Aftercare checks are in the plan; nobody is charged twice for the same eye.
Children's clinic and OCT
Sight tests for under-16s are NHS-funded, and a child who cannot yet read letters is tested on shapes and matching cards instead. Nothing about the appointment requires them to speak.
OCT imaging is offered from age eight upward, because a baseline scan taken now is the thing a scan in ten years is compared against.
The pinhole changes nothing here
Hold a card with a pin-sized hole in front of the eye and blur from a focusing error mostly disappears: the hole admits only the central rays, so the lens has less work to do. It is the fastest test in the room and it is a test of what we can sell you.
When the pinhole makes no difference, the problem is not focus, and a stronger prescription is the wrong answer. That is the morning we write a referral letter instead of an order — cataract, macular change, something on the nerve — and it is the reason the heading above did not move when you reached it.
If this line is hard to read at arm's length, book an eye test.
That sentence is set at 17px, which is this site's 6/6 line. Reading it at a normal working distance is roughly what 6/6 vision does. Struggling with it is not a diagnosis — but it is a reason to sit in the chair.
