£45, OCT scan included · 45 minutes

A 45-minute eye test with retinal photographs and a 3D OCT scan of the back of the eye, for £45. One optometrist, one room, no sales pitch.

What is included

  • A conversation about your eyes, your work and your family history
  • Vision and prescription checked with a phoropter and trial lenses
  • Eye pressures, without the puff of air
  • Visual fields when your age or history calls for it
  • Retinal photographs, kept on file for comparison
  • A 3D OCT scan of the macula and optic nerve
  • Your prescription on paper, and the results explained before you leave

Most eye tests answer one question: do you need new glasses? Ours answers that one in the first twenty minutes and spends the rest on the one that matters more: are your eyes healthy?

History first, chart second

The first ten minutes are questions. What you do at what distance, what has changed, what runs in the family, which medicines you take. Half the useful findings of an eye test are in that conversation. The chart only tells us where to start.

Better with one, or two?

The prescription itself is found by bracketing. Two lenses a quarter of a dioptre apart go up, and you say which is clearer. “They look the same” is a real answer: it means the bracket has closed.

The OCT scan

An OCT scan takes a cross-section of the retina, layer by layer, in about four seconds an eye. It shows swelling, thinning and fluid long before they change what you can see. Most practices charge £30 to £60 for it on top of the test. We include it, because a scan is most useful when there is last year’s to compare it with.

What you leave with

Your prescription on paper, a plain-English summary of what we found, and a date for your next test. If something needs a specialist, we write the referral that day and give you a copy.

Eye test with OCT
“The OCT scan picked up a small change at the back of my left eye that two chain-store tests had missed. Hannah showed me the scan, explained it, and wrote to the hospital before I had left the building.”

What people ask us first

How long does it take?

Forty-five minutes with the optometrist. Allow an hour if you want to look at frames afterwards.

Do I need drops to widen my pupils?

Usually not, because the OCT scan and photographs see through a normal pupil. If we do need drops we tell you first, and you should not drive for a few hours.

Can I bring my current glasses?

Please do, and any contact lenses you wear. We measure what you have before we measure what you need.
