Dry-eye clinic

From £65

4.9 (640)

Assessment £65, follow-up £35 · 40 minutes

Gritty, watery or tired eyes looked at properly. A 40-minute assessment with tear-film tests and gland imaging, and a written plan you can follow at home.

What is included

  • A symptom questionnaire, scored so we can measure progress
  • Tear break-up time and tear volume tests
  • Imaging of the oil glands in your eyelids
  • A check of your eyelids and lashes for blepharitis
  • A written treatment plan with product names and prices
  • A follow-up call after two weeks

Dry eye is the most common reason people come to us between eye tests, and the most commonly under-treated. A bottle of drops from the chemist helps for an hour. Finding out why your tears are not doing their job helps for good.

What we look at

Hannah runs the clinic. She times how long your tear film holds together, measures how much tear you make, and images the oil glands along your lid margins. Blocked or missing glands explain most dry eye in adults.

The plan

You leave with a written plan: what to do at home, morning and evening, which products to buy and what they should cost. Most plans start with a heated mask, lid cleaning and a preservative-free drop, and most people feel a difference in two to three weeks.

When it is not dry eye

Gritty, red or sore eyes can also mean allergy, infection or a problem with the eyelids. If that is what we find, we treat it or refer it the same day.

“Two years of drops that did nothing. One assessment, a heated mask and a routine, and my eyes are comfortable at the end of a working day again.”

What people ask us first

Why are my dry eyes watering?

When the oily layer of the tears is poor, they evaporate too fast, the eye gets irritated and makes floods of watery tears that do not stay put. Watering is one of the commonest dry-eye symptoms.

Will I need drops for ever?

Not always. Warm compresses and lid care fix a lot of cases on their own. Drops are for comfort while that works.

Is this covered by a funded test?

No. A funded eye test checks the health of the eye, but a full dry-eye assessment is a separate private appointment.
